Hackney REP is

a community partnership improving education

Our partnership is made up of East London and Hackney based organisations that are run BY and FOR the community.

Our organisations are the pillars of our area, trusted and respected by all, from young people and families to schools, local council and London wide decision makers.

About Hackney REP

Why are we taking action

Education is a key determinant of health. Our young people deserve to access an education that treats them with respect and supports them to grow and achieve.

In Hackney, young people are 65% more at risk of school exclusion than the London average.

We see our diversity as a strength, but our young people from Black Caribbean heritage face an exclusion rate 4X higher than their white British peers.

We know that no child is the same and some need more specialist support, but children with Special Educational Needs (SEND) are 5X more likely to be excluded from school, with a 50% increase in unmet needs in the last year.

Our Mission

- Prevent school exclusions.

- Improve re-inclusion and SEND support.

- Campaign and Influence for inclusive school policies that support the whole young person.

- Support young people to achieve their best

- Highlight the impact of school exclusions through research and platforming youth voice.

- Support young people and families to access education according to their needs and rights.

The impact of school exclusions

The facts about school exclusion...

School exclusion and negative school experiences cause poor mental health and well-being in young people.

The exclusions increase in England has coincided with school funding cuts.

Each excluded young person will cost £370,000 in expenditure including benefits, healthcare and criminal justice costs.

School exclusions are a trigger point for criminal exploitation.

Excluded  pupils are overwhelmingly poorer, from Black and minority ethnic groups and/or living with a disability.

Permanent exclusions have increased by 71% in the UK in the last seven years.
